It’s a short one, but a rather precise and thoughtful quote. I’m sure everyone has at least one incredible story tucked away in their memory, the kind they’ve never seen play out in any movie plot.

Our imagination is shaped, for the most part, by the ideas we’ve acquired: books we’ve read, scenes we’ve seen in movies, or simply things from life. But life is an interesting and multifaceted thing in every sense. And sometimes it manages to surprise us even more than any fantasy novel. Without dwarves, elves, or orcs, of course, but armed with nothing more than the world, nature, and ordinary little people, life is capable of generating some pretty colorful and astonishing events.

Today we’ll try to make sense of a quote from the first book of my favorite fantasy saga, The Black Company, by Glen Cook.

Here’s the full paragraph from which the statement that caught my interest was taken:

“When I think about my comrades’ characters, I often wish I had one small talent — the ability to look into their souls and tear away the veil covering the darkness and light that drives them. But after a quick glance into the jungle of my own soul, I thank the heavens that I can’t do that. Someone who barely survives the battle with himself has no right to dig around in other people’s souls.”
