Another gem from Glen Cook, from the fantasy saga «The Black Company — Shadows Linger». As usual, this phrase is taken out of context. Let’s fix that a bit.

According to the plot, the main character was assigned to a local law enforcement representative to conduct reconnaissance in the city the Black Company arrived in to carry out a special task for its employer. Reflections and analysis of his colleague’s behavior during one of these outings are what the quote reflects.

Greetings!

Another line from my favorite fantasy saga «The Black Company». The author of this work has a very subtle sense of the principles by which human life unfolds, and this quote is a great example of that. The phrase is attributed to the most pivotal character of the saga, from whose perspective most of the books are narrated.

I’m sure this character is the author’s own alter ego, since it’s precisely his philosophical views that get the main emphasis in the novel.

Today we’ll try to make sense of a quote from the first book of my favorite fantasy saga, The Black Company, by Glen Cook.

Here’s the full paragraph from which the statement that caught my interest was taken:

“When I think about my comrades’ characters, I often wish I had one small talent — the ability to look into their souls and tear away the veil covering the darkness and light that drives them. But after a quick glance into the jungle of my own soul, I thank the heavens that I can’t do that. Someone who barely survives the battle with himself has no right to dig around in other people’s souls.”
