Just thoughts
Greetings!

Today is Sunday. Caught in a fleeting wave of nostalgia, my thoughts drifted toward philosophy, and I felt like reflecting on life. Once again I found myself pondering fairly banal things. What is life, and why is it exactly the way it is?
In truth, these questions don’t really require answers at all. Especially if you think about them from the standpoint of life itself. After all, we live in a material world, and by its very nature that world is completely neutral, and therefore cynical, cruel, and utterly unfair. But we live this life in this world, not somewhere over a rainbow. We adapt to its rules, even though our brain stubbornly resists them. It (our brain) wants to live in its own, isolated world and dreams of doing so by its own rules. As a result, it constantly tries to steer us down that path. Except that path is doomed… to fail. And we constantly run into the dilemma of our plans and expectations about the near (and not so near) future not matching the constant unpredictability of reality.

As I was mulling all this over, for some reason I recalled a quote from an interesting movie — one I’ve actually already quoted another character from, not too long ago:

“The only guarantee you get when you get into this game is a guarantee of losing.”

Jake Green — Revolver, 2005.

I think few people would argue that life is a kind of game, something like a computer MMO RPG that people play. You grow — you level up, you gain a profession, various achievements for personal accomplishments, you earn gold, and periodically you clash with others like yourself, and not only with them. This game is played by the rules of the real world. And the only guarantee in the game, as mentioned above, is a guarantee of losing. Even considering everything the word “losing” could mean. Life has enough conventions to identify anyone as a loser in the game of life. At any moment you can screw up, make a mistake, hurt someone, or simply depart for the next world. No one doubts that such an outcome is guaranteed for everyone alive. I understand, thoughts like these look somewhat… fatalistic, even. But that’s most likely just an expression of my pessimistic nature. I can’t quite understand life’s optimists. In my view, the world is almost always cynical, harsh, and completely indifferent to specific individuals. What positivity it contains amounts only to brief moments of joy, which a person forms through their perception of specific things. And this almost always happens unconsciously. And yet we all keep living. And something drives us forward. Could it really be that those tiny moments of joy are enough for our brains to keep hoping for the best, and to keep moving, achieving goals, and solving problems, again and again?

So there you have it — a slightly sad, lyrical little note. Thanks for reading, and I wish you a good game.
