Why a raven?

Ravens are very interesting creatures. Besides being among the most intelligent birds (which is exactly why it’s so interesting to watch them), they also carry a certain symbolism that varies depending on the cultural views of different peoples.

Birds of the raven genus usually carry a negative superstitious meaning: because of their appearance — black color plus a rather large size, if we’re talking about black ravens, or, scientifically speaking, the common raven — and because these birds are scavengers, which in turn implies the historical feasts of this family’s representatives on battlefields after fierce clashes that resulted in the deaths of many people, such as the wars of medieval Europe. Such images could not help but become etched forever into humanity’s memory.

But despite this, in many countries the raven symbolizes a whole range of completely different things, not necessarily negative ones: wisdom, love, healing power, longevity, death, and fertility.

As an example, one can cite the most famous case — the mythology of the Scandinavian countries, in which the raven symbolizes wisdom and high intelligence. You’ve probably heard stories about the feathered companions of the Norse god Odin — Huginn and Muninn.

As for my own perception, this bird doesn’t have a single, unambiguous meaning to me. But the very fact that its perception as a symbol is multifaceted for different people is what makes it such an interesting phenomenon. I’m certainly drawn to its high level of intelligence and its striking appearance. That’s exactly why the raven was chosen as the symbol of my blog and, aesthetically speaking, is my favorite of God’s creatures.
