This quote is taken from a popular American crime series «Criminal Minds». The gist of the show: a special FBI unit investigates serial murders committed by maniacs of varying levels of “complexity”.
I’d like to draw attention to the first phrase of the dialogue: « Try again, fail again, fail better «, which, as the phrase suggests, is a quote from the French-Irish writer Samuel Beckett.
The world is arranged so that gaining experience in its pure form never happens. Such a process is almost always accompanied by making mistakes and overcoming obstacles. After which comes the analysis of the events that occurred and the formation of new knowledge and skills. This is precisely what lies at the very core of the concept of experience. From this we can conclude that mistakes are inevitable, and attempts to avoid failures 100% of the time are, forgive the tautology, doomed to fail.
Consequently, being afraid to make mistakes or trying with all one’s might to avoid them means attempting to redo the world order that has existed since the beginning of life, which obviously makes no sense.
Off-topic about the source of the quote (the show).
As a detective show it’s very interesting, but its “crime” genre takes its toll, and after a while it becomes hard to watch (there are 15 seasons…). Pretty much the same as with the show «Dexter». I myself never fully finished watching either of these two shows.
