Command Interpreter or Shell
Greetings!

I’m sure many are familiar with the command line in Windows systems — cmd.exe, as well as its more modern variation — Power shell. These programs are command shells.

In Linux systems, other, quite flexible in their use, command shells are common: bash, zsh, fish, and others. We’ll talk in more detail, comparing the features of various shells, another time.

In total, there is a huge variety of such shells today.

I want to note that in Linux-based operating systems, the command interpreter is one of the main tools for configuring the operating system.

When using a Desktop Environment, such shells operate inside a terminal emulator — a program emulating the classic device (console), which, even before the advent of personal computers, was used to connect to and control a computer, either local or remote.
